درسته!عصبی بودم، خیلی وحشتناک عصبی بودم و هستم . اما چرا می گویید دیوانه ام؟ بیماری حس هایم را قوی کرده بود تخریب ویا گنگ نکرده بود. ازهمه بیشتر حس شنیدن را. همه چیز آسمان و زمین را می شنیدم. چیزهای زیادی از جهنم می شنیدم. چطور می توانم دیوانه باشم؟ گوش کنید! و ببینید که چطور در سلامتی و آرامش می توانم کل داستان را برایتان تعریف کنم.

ممکن نیست بتوانم بگویم که چطور این فکر به ذهن ام رسید و شب و روزم را شکار کرد.
منظورخاصي نداشتم. خشم نبود. پیر مرد را دوست داشتم. هیچ وقت با من بد رفتاری نکرد. هیچوقت به من توهین نکرد.اشتیاقی به طلاهایش نداشتم. فکرکنم مسئله چشم اش بود! بله همین !

اين جوزفين Josephine، خواهرش بود که با جملاتي دست و پا شکسته و اشاراتي پنهان که مخفيانه آشکار ميشد، خبر را گفت. دوستِ همسرش، ريچاردز Richards هم آنجا بود، نزد خانم ملارد. و او کسي بود که هنگام رسيدن خبر حادثه‌ي راه‌آهن، به انضمام اسم برنتلي ملارد Brently Mallard در بالاي ليست اسامي کشته شدگان، در دفتر روزنامه بود، و تنها به اندازه‌اي به خودش وقت داد که با تلگراف بعدي از حقيقتِ امر مطمئن شود، تا آورنده‌ي خبر بد اشتباهي نباشد.

آسمان صبح 27 ژوئن صاف و آفتابی بود. با گرمایی تازه از یک روز کاملاً تابستانی. گلها با اشتیاق عمیقی شکوفه می‌دادند و دشت کاملاً سرسبز شده بود. حوالی ساعت 10 بود که مردم دهکده بتدریج در میدانی که بین اداره پست و بانک قرار داشت گردِ هم آمدند. در بعضی شهرها که جمعیت مردم بسیار زیاد بود، بخت‌آزمایی تقریباً دو روز طول می‌کشید و از 26 ژوئن شروع می‌شد. در این شهر که تنها در حدود سیصد نفر سکنه داشت تمام مراسمِ بخت‌آزمایی فقط دو ساعت بطول می‌انجامید. بنابراین این برنامه در ساعت ده صبح شروع می‌شد و فقط تا زمانی ادامه می‌یافت که به روستائیان اجازه می‌داد برای صرف شام به خانه‌ی خود بروند.

شب پاییزی تاریکی بود. بانکدار پیر، آرام آرام داشت مطالعه می کرد و در ذهن خود میهمانی ای را بیاد می آورد که پاییز پانزده سال پیش ترتیب داده بود. آدمهای باهوشی در آن میهمانی حضور داشتند و مکالمه ای بسیار جالب توجه پیش آمده بود. در خلال سایر مسایل، در مورد مجازات اعدام صحبت کردند. مهمانان، که میانشان روزنامه نگار و تحصیل کرده کم نبود، از نقش بسیار ناپسند اعدام، گفتگو کردند و آن را یکی از ابزارهای کهنه و غیراخلاقی مجازات شمردند. برخی از آنان این تفکر را داشتند که شایسته است که مجازات حبس ابد بطور جهانی جایگزین مجازات اعدام شود.

پيرمردي با عينکي دوره فلزي و لباس خاک آلود کنار جاده نشسته بود. روي رودخانه پلي چوبي کشيده بودند و گاريها، کاميونها، مردها، زنها و بچه ها از روي آن مي گذشتند. گاريها که با قاطر کشيده مي شدند، به سنگيني از شيب ساحل بالا مي رفتند، سربازها پره چرخها را مي گرفتند و آنها را به جلو مي راندند. کاميونها به سختي به بالا مي لغزيدند و دور مي شدند و همه پل را پشت سر مي گذاشتند. روستاييها توي خاکي که تا قوزکهايشان مي رسيد به سنگيني قدم برمي داشتند.

"یوآن پوتاپوف" درشكه‌چی، سراپایش سفید شده، چون شبحی به نظر می‌آید. او تا حدی كه ممكن است انسانی تا شود، خم گشته و بی‌حركت بالای درشكه نشسته است. شاید اگر تل برفی هم رویش بریزند باز هم واجب نداند برای ریختن برف‌ها خود را تكان دهد... اسب لاغرش هم سفید شده و بی‌حركت ایستاده است.
